Increasing use of VOIP services

When people first started using the voice over internet protocol services for long distance telephony, it was not easy for them to believe that they are doing the same at rates as low as the local ones. There were some time lags and gaps in this communication which used the computers. The Voip services, as these are called in short, were not that good in quality in the beginning. Besides the time gap in communication, there were problems of occasional signal breakages. This was essentially due to the less developed VOIP technology and partly due to the internet speeds.

What actually is voice over internet protocol, or VOIP? In simple terms, it makes use of the internet wires to send the voice over to the other person. The voice is converted into small packets or files which are then transmitted through the internet protocol. It does not make use of the regular telephones lines for this purpose. A software is required to be downloaded which carries out this task.

There are three different ways in which this internet-based communication can happen. One of the ways is to make use of the computer, headset and microphones. Software is downloaded onto the computer which acts as a real life telephone. The calls can be made using this software. Headphones are used for listening and the microphone for listening. The second way is to make use of the Voip phonewhich is attached to the computer as well as to the internet wires. This is like the normal telephone instrument which is used for making the calls, but over the internet. The third way of using this is by way of downloading the software in the mobile and getting connected using the wired or wireless internet. The wireless internet connectivity is achieved using the WLANs or it can be taken from the internet service providers as well. Since it does not cost much to the bills of internet usage, especially if you are making use of the unlimited plans, only nominal charges are to be paid to the service provider.

It is not just the telephony but also a number of other features which make it much sought after method of telephony. Free PC to PC calls using the same service provider is one of them. Then you can actually have the video conferencing free of cost between the different locations. The transfer of files, instant messages, call forwarding, diverting and a range of other features make is quite a useful application. These are helpful in cutting down the telephonic and other costs like fuel charges for commutation substantially.
