LCD/LED

Display technology has travelled a long technological distance from the days of cathode array tube based display devices to the most modern LCD/LED/SED and plasma displays. It was only recently that the CRT TV sales worldwide were beaten by the LCD TVs signalling that the times of the CRT display are numbered and that the modern displays are being increasing adopted by the people. For the technical person, the difference between the two technologies is immense but for the consumers it is the easy-to-use and easy-to-manage nature of these appliancesthat matter the most. No wonder that most of the top names in the consumer electronics products are spending fortunes to be the leaders in the cutting edge display technologies.

For the layman who does not understand the meaning of these technology terms, the difference is there to be seen. The good old Samsung TV would be bulky since it has the picture tube in it but the new LCD /LED TVs would be slim and sleek with flat displays. And, you do not have to buy a trolley for keeping the new ones. These can be fixed on the walls. In this way, you save the considerable space for moving around. These are perfect for small spaces. Due their being slim, these are easy to carry as compared to the bulky ones. It is also a fact that the picture quality of these displays is better than the previous ones. This has largely to do with the high definition resolution levels compatibility of these displays and also with the use of the latest display technology.

While getting the modern slim TVs installed in the homes or office, the points of their placement are to be duly considered. These shall be placed at the right places on the walls. The placement shall preferably be straight for most of the viewers since these are not visually appealing when these are viewed from the side angles. This is one aspect where the CRT scores over the modern LCD/LED ones. CRT based Samsung TV will give the same picture irrespective of the place or angle from where you view it.

Plasma TVs are yet another innovation in the display technology. There are more long lasting than the LCD TV/LED TV ones. The only disadvantage that these currently face is that the impressions of the last images remain on the screen for a long time even after the TV is switched off. The companies are making efforts to get over this drawback.

There is no doubt that the modern TVs are an improvement over the others, both in terms of technology as well as user experience. It is also a fact that these are more practical to use. That is also the reason why most of the modern homes use these for setting up modern systems like the home theatre. These have also taken the wall space of organisations where these find good application in lobby, waiting rooms, visitor’s areas and other such area where the works not going on.

LCD and LED

There were times when the cathode ray tube based TVs held sway. In fact, these ruled the TV display technology till the last decade of the last century when their global sales dipped for the first time against the rising sale of the LCD TV sets. All major companies of the world, which make the consumer electronic items, including Samsung, have now shifted their focus on making the more practical, slimmer, LCD/LED TV sets which are fast replacing the outdated CRT sets. The Samsung LED TV is an improvement over the LCD TV since the former uses light emitting diode for backlighting purposes, obviating the need for a tube. The result is the emergence of the visually more appealing and wall-mountable TVs.

LCD/LED technology has made it possible for the companies to provide real life display to the users in the various modern devices that they use. Computers and mobiles are two of the most important areas where this technology finds application. Samsung Galaxy and a range of the smart phones with wide touchscreen features use the LCD/LED TV display technology. Mobiles are used for a range of picture and video based works. Whether it is the playing of the multi-media files, or browsing the internet or even viewing the pictures shot from the mobile camera, these screens provide the most real-to-life display of the photos.

The LCD TV screens in mobiles are a blessing since these provide the best viewing experience of the photos, videos and along with the high resolution cameras that these smart phones come with, the viewing never got better anytime before. When the times of the CRT based TVs were around, the LCD display was limited only to monochrome screen which glowed with one light only. Mobiles have a long way since then. With better contrast ratios and higher resolution capabilities, the picture quality does not leave much to be desired.

Samsung LED TV is more costly than the CRT TV. Further, the latter gives a better view from the side angles, which is not the case with the former. For the TV, where the screens are bigger, you might need to sit straight in order to see the pictures, images or videos. But, in mobiles, due to the comparatively smaller screen size and essentially single user usage, this visual distortion does not matter much as it does in case of LCD TV.

The major benefits of the Samsung LED TVs are their excellent audio-visual delivery, slim and sleek features and the flexibility of using these as wall mounts which occupies less space. These also form part of home theatre system since wider screens can be made using the LCD/LED technology while retaining their sleekness. This was not possible in the era of CRT TVs
This has enabled the use of these TV for public viewing, besides the home or office viewing. Today, one can see these being used in the shopping malls, stadiums, crowded markets and other outdoor places.

Horizons of the display technologies

There is a lot of craze among the people for the new audio-visual devices which can give them better viewing and listening experience. The technological leaps have been small and gradual, but very fast paced. This has led to change in the technological horizons of the display devices. Companies like Sony and others have been at the forefront of bringing these changes to the homes and office of the people.

If it were not for the light emitting diodes, the LED TV would be same as the LCD TV. The latter makes use of the liquid crystal display technology for displaying the images and videos on the screen whereas the former makes use of the light emitting diodes for the backlighting purposes. The LED TV is considered to be technologically superior to the LCD TV and capable of giving a far better viewing experience. Both of them are more practical innovations to the older cathode ray tube based bulky TVs.

Some of the main features of these new age TVs are:

1.These are more practical in the sense that these can packed easily and can be fixed on the walls. This might seem to be a bit unnoticeable point but has great utility in areas of limited space. This is possible due to the sleek and slim designs of these TVs. The old CRT TV was quite bulky, had more depth which limited its placement on some cabinet. This also caused hindrances to the movement of people.
2.These LCD and LED TVs from reputed companies like Sony and others support the high definition features of the images and videos. This means that if the videos have been shot and recorded with cameras having more than 2 MP resolution levels, then these can be seen on these TVs with good deal of clarity.

The LED technology is considered to be a shred better than the LCD TV technology mainly due to better contrast ratios and wider viewing angles. The backlighting in the LED gets switch off in the darker or black regions of the image which improves the contrast ratios. Further, if you view the screen from some angle from the centre of the TV, the viewing is better in case of the LED TV.

The improvement in the display technology has resulted in the making of these TV sets. The LED TVs are very costly and this is the reason for their limited entry into the drawing rooms of the people. The OLED TV, a further improvement over the LED TV does not require even the backlighting. It makes use of the Organic light emitting diodes for this purpose.

The researchers at top companies of the world, like Sony are always working on newer technologies to further improve the display technologies and devices. This improvement is now sought to be introduced in the SED technology. This is believed to hold a lot of promise for the future since it combines the best of the old and the new technologies.

From CRT TV to LED TV

There is always a debate on whether the new products are better than the older ones. Since the technology had advanced, there is definitely more to argue in favour of this argument, than against it. This debate has been ranging for all times and for all the things that are new. The people who are averse to change, at least till the point that the new things become very common and the old ones are near to be discarded, will habitually compare the new with the old. One such comparison has been that of the display devices like the TV.

TV technology has undergone considerable change. This has made a considerable impact on the size, design and the shape of the TVs, not to speak of its numerous new features and functions. The movement of the TV technology from the CRT to the tube-less LCD TV has been quite a long one, considering the pace of the subsequent technology changes. From CRT to LCD, the TVs have become slimmer, thinner, flatter and easy to carry. Not that the CRT ones have been thrown into oblivion but only that their sales have been taken over by the LCD TV sales a few years back. This obviously means that people are fast changing the track and coming on the new, supposedly better display technology. Since the CRT TV does not have depth and can be really slim, it means that these are more practical to be used, attached to the walls, kept on the cabinets and even made into the home theatres.

The LED TV is a further improvement of the technology. From LCD to the LED, the change brought about by the change in the backlighting device gives the users a better viewing experience. The contrast ratios are better, the display screens become wider, the TVs become even thinner, viewing from greater side angles is possible and there is some improvement in the power consumption also. Despite these advantages these have not been able to beat the LCDs because, being a new technology, the LEDs are prohibitively costlier for common people. Further, the LED TV generally come in wider screens, much bigger in size than the normal LCD TVs. This also limits their practical, daily use.

Companies like Sony are devising ways and means to bring down the costs of the LED TVs. The companies at the forefront of the technological research in the consumer electronics always keep in mind the practicality and the utility of the new devices which are developed by them. The companies continuously keep bringing in better innovations and the pace of these innovations is so high that the moment one technology is seen and understood by the common man, the new one comes up to replace it. This is quite evident that while the LCD TV has taken over the CRT TV in global sales volume now, the LED is yet to establish itself completely in the home and offices of the people, the new technology SED TV is knocking on the doors. There are many parallel running technological changes as well, like the plasma TV, OLED TV and others, from which the users can make a choice.

Why are LED lighting devices better than the traditional ones?

There is a continuous innovation in the display technology. The cathode ray tube based TVs or computer monitors are now giving way to the more advanced display lighting systems. These are the modern day liquid colour display and the light emitting diode technology based display lighting technologies. Companies like Sony are now fast outdating the CRT based display with the flat screen, practical LCD TV or the LED lighting technology based displays.

What makes LED so special? Why is its usage fast outstripping the demand of the CRT displays? There are many advantages which come with the LED. Some of these are the following:

1.Widespread use: LED lighting has been there for some decades now and is therefore a proven technology. Its use is not confined only to the TVs or ,monitors but is also being used extensively in different electronic and lighting devices like bulbs, telephones, and others.LCD TV have life in tens of thousands of hours.

5.Score over CFL: You must not confuse the LED with the CFL lighting devices. The latter contains mercury which makes it necessary to handle it with extreme care. The presence of mercury makes them dangerous to use. These are therefore very environment unfriendly.

6.Do not heat up: The LED lighting devices does not heat up even after using them for several hours. The incandescent lights and the CFL can get hearted within a few minutes but not the LED ones.

7.Constant light throughout their life: The light of the LED devices is of same intensity all through their lifetime. These do not get dim. In fact, they fade only when these are at the end of their very long lifetime.

All these factors make the light emitting diode based lighting devices extremely popular, especially among those who want to reduce their monthly electricity bills as well as are conscious of the damage to environment. These might be more expensive than the traditional ones but when their advantages are considered, these are found to be more practical.
